Above: Martin Amezquite holds up the winning bluefin caught aboard K&Ms 25 Parker with Capt. Kelly Catian while fishing the annual Govorners Cup tournament this past Laborday weekend. Fishing has been exellent so far this Sept with Bluefin tuna, Yellowfin tuna, Dorado, Yellowtail, Whiteseabass all on the menu! Water temps have been in the 70s and the fish are very close in with some 30-40 lbs bluefin just outside the 240 and 6 fathom. Inshore there are lots of Yellowtail on the reefs and of course Whiteseabass along the coast. On Saturday we had 2 Bluefin, 4 Yellowfin and 2 Yellowtail before running for the scales for the weigh-in. We decided to take it easy and fish inshore on Sunday and got Whiteseabass,Calicos,Sandbass and Rockfish. Summer Yellowtail out at San Martin Island have been the mainstay this last couple weeks as the whiteseabass seemed to slow a bit due to colder water on the south coast seabass grounds. But warmer water hanging around Isla San Martin made for some fun yellowtail fishing with lots of other species to be caught as well. Yellows have been on Live-bait, iron and also on trolled rapalas. Theres alot of barracuda in the mix and some Exellent Calico bass fishing right now as well. Baitfish have been thick out on weather side of Isla so theres bee alot of action back there. Bait has been slow in the bay but very good out at island with lots of spanish and greenback macks. Bluefin ! The bluefin have been sitting about 30 miles out but have been tough to find and slow to bite but the paddys can be very good with a mix of tuna, yellowtail and dorado as we enter September. Diving-Spearfishing has been good for yellowtail and a few whiteseabass as well as lots of huge calicos. Theres also alot of John Gligo (with yellowtail) and buddy Greg Wheeler of San Clemente Ca fished aboard K&Ms 23 Parker with Capt. George "Bird" Catian. Greg got this big baja croaker on a slow trolled spoon. The guys fished 4 days total and had big seabass down south, yellowtail at San Martin island as well as lingcod, reds and other good eating bottom fish. The guys made a run offshore but didnt find anything on the few paddys they hit, water was still a bit cool (mid/low 60s) we had a bit of wind that may have rolled it a bit. John Cote (above) with a fat Yellowtail he got while slow-trolling live bait at Bens Rock. Martyn Mayhead holds a 240 yellow taken on live bait as well. Things are heating up quick, yellows starting to chew and theres sardine in the bay and squid out at the island. Water was 64-65 and seas were calm with mix S/W swell. Its the time of year when our surface temps start to rise into the 60s, yellowtail and whiteseabass start to feed up top and large schools of yellowtail migrate into the area from offshore to feed on bait around San Quintins many offshore reefs and highspots. Calico Bass fishing at Isla San Martin can be exellent during these months as well. Rockfish like the big vermillion rockcod and large lingcod are abundant this time of year as well and many fisherman come just for the exellent bottom fishing. San Diego Angler and long time baja travler Juan Cote holds a San Quintin Yellowtail caught aboard K&Ms 25 Parker "Offshore III" The fish have been holding near rocky ledges and dropoffs around the 240 and Bens Rock Heavy Irons work best cranked hard and fast off the bottom. Live bait such as greenback mackerel and spanish macks works great when available. Theres great bottom fishing right now as well as Calic/Sand Bass Fishing is exellent in San Quintin right now! Theres giant White Seabass, Wide Open Yellofin Tuna are now as close as 13 miles. Big Homeguard yellowtail at the 240 rock and 6 Fathom spot have been hammering the big mackerel slow-trolled or flylined. I was out yesterday (9-11-12) with my son Capt. George and we got into yellowtail on iron and giant whiteseabass! The big 68.1 lbs Croaker took a green mack pattern Kroc near the bottom. Water has been warm 67-68 inside and 70+ offshore. K&M Capts Oscar George and myself have been out nonstop for the last couple months and its been really good ....and still getting better! |
